Technology Infusion Working Group
About Us
The Earth Science Data Systems Working Groups (
ESDSWG) were established in 2004 by NASA to engage the scientific community in defining new concepts for future data systems. The Technology Infusion Working Group (TIWG) is one of four working groups identified in the REASoN CAN. The other three working groups are Software Reuse, Standards, and Metrics.
The purpose of the TIWG is to enable NASA's Earth Science community to reach its research, application, and education goals more quickly and cost effectively through widespread adoption of key emerging information technologies. To accomplish this, the working group has focused on two main activities:
- Defining and conducting community-based processes to identify needed capabilities and technologies and
- Defining approaches and processes to infuse new technologies into the evolving Earth science data systems.
Capability Vision
One of the first activities of the working group was to develop a capability vision for Earth science. The capability vision serves two purposes: it helps focus the efforts of NASA and the Earth science community, and it provides a yardstick by which we can measure our progress.
The capability vision for Earth science information systems includes five core capabilities that will enable the delivery of next-generation analysis and modeling frameworks. These capabilities will also enable widespread use of intelligent tools that assist users in discovering and interpreting data needed for their particular research, application, or education purpose. The envisioned capabilities will be built on a flexible processing, storage, and communications infrastructure.

TIWG Subgroups
The TIWG has established a number of subgroups to focus on specific aspects of technology infusion. The Process and Strategies subgroup has been working on understanding the mechanisms by which the Earth science community identifies new and emerging technologies and the ways that the we become aware of, evaluate, and, ultimately, adopt those technologies. The other subgroups have focused on in-depth investigation of specific technologies of interest to the community, these include web services, services interoperability and orchestration, and semantic web.
The technology-specific subgroups have developed assessments of the state of maturity of the technologies within the Earth science community, developed technology infusion roadmaps that map out future adoption paths for the technologies, and developed various white papers, presentations and demonstrations that assist the community in better understanding the technologies. The current subgroups are: Data Stewardship, Process and Strategies, Services Interoperability and Orchestration, Sensor Web, and Semantic Web.
Further details of our activities are available in the current work plan.
